The history of Schneeballen

The original Rothenburg Schneeballen are an over 300-year-old shortbread baked in lard (today in vegetable fat, i.e. VEGETARIAN) and are well-known in the Franconian Hohenlohe region. The balls are baked in special snowball irons and originally dusted with icing sugar. In the past, snowballs were eaten as festive pastries on special occasions such as weddings and church consecrations or, as described in a 300-year-old source, by the high nobility during a tour of a mill. The high reputation of the Middle Franconian town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber made the snowballs famous and today they are sold in numerous variations and fillings.
